STATEMENT

December is the month for love, pampering, and guilty pleasures — the glittering hum of celebration, the promise of long-awaited rest, and the joy of being surrounded by those we love. It’s a season that invites indulgence: do whatever you want, eat whatever you want, drink whatever you want, and love whoever you want. Guilty pleasures are in.

TLC — Tender Loving Care, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Oks, is a love letter to those luxuries — big and small — that make the holidays so irresistibly intoxicating.

In this body of work, Oks presents a delightfully humorous series of porcelain sculptures: a collection of ashtrays shaped like beloved kawaii characters, their eyes bloodshot and adorned with gold leaf; classic holiday album covers rendered with meticulous precision; and vinyl records so convincing they can fool you into thinking they’ll play on a turntable.

The exhibition also features Oks’ porcelain shopping bags, a body of work she developed in 2015, which have since gained acclaim for their blend of utility and style. From the matching fried chicken bucket-and-side set to her miniature wearable sculptures of consumer goods, lipstick-marked cigarettes, and an irreverent arrangement of French fries spelling out “Let It Snow,” Oks’ work radiates a childlike playfulness and wonder, paired with a distinctly New York attitude that transforms the everyday into the extraordinary.

In many ways, TLC functions as a self-portrait — an open invitation to step into Oks’ world, rooted right in the heart of Downtown Manhattan. Presented at EVERANDART, Tokyo, the exhibition reveals the artist’s favorite treats, songs, rituals, and objects: the things she cherishes most during the holidays.

Here’s to joy in excess, warmth in abundance, and art that brightens the world.

Happy Holidays — from Oks to you, with tender loving care.

Oks

Sakamoto Tokuro

  • グループ 20

Oks lives and works in the East Village, New York City. In 1993, Oks immigrated to New York from the USSR, now Ukraine, and has been a New Yorker since. Her multimedia practice stems from her childhood, as she was profoundly influenced by her father’s skillful trade in commercial sign painting. She has explored an extensive variety of mediums, including ceramics, pyrography, painting, jewelry, textiles, printmaking, and illustration. In 1997, Oks assumed the role of being the right-hand (wo)man for contemporary artist Tom Sachs; in 2021, she stepped down to entirely concentrate on her own creative practice. Oks is the real deal—all of her work is produced by the artist herself. Her work explores themes of power, popular culture, sex, and female roles in modern society. With acerbic wit and a touch of class, she invites the daring and curious to experience how she filters the world.
